On location in Vale de ferro, Mexilhoeira Grande, Portugal
First lesson this morning, swell! Writing in english since there are are no swedish letters on the portugese computor. :-) Today I rode a 17 years old Lusitano by the name of Boomerang, 155 cm over the back and in an portugese sadel looking like a sofa. A pony by our standards... The instructor, Petra, was german, educated in Vechta and a skilled rider. Terrific pedagog as well. Initially we we walked in circles and in an eight. Using the weight and stomach to stear and to control the horse. She combined theory with practise end explained everything very clearly. "The horse is a reflection of its rider" And you hold him with your stomach and with your thighs, you ask him with your leg and you give with your hands." Very easy in other words! :-)
The horses are very calm to handle but very eager and energetic to ride. No spurs or whip necessary and very gentle hands and soft reins.

Mmm, and it works too! At the end of the lesson I had begun to understand and be able to execute the instructions and was immeiately rewarded by a calmer and happier horse as well as Bra! from Trixie, riding on the other half of the arena.
The other guests on the farm are three swedish girls who claim riding trips to be like a poison, and a male and very gentle medical doctor from Austria... ("Have you been to the Spanish riding school in Vienna? No, I find dressage painful for the horse, I only do Western riding, wich is more natural.") Hm, Okay! Interesting discussions take place during our meals together. Yesterday we all dined in front of the huge telly, watching the Eurovision song contest and all calling on our cell phones to wote for Sweden. Apparently it did no good. :-(
Back to the sunshine and the pool for a coffee now, will write more tomorrow. Looking forward to tomorrows lesson wen I will be able to try out a new horse!
